Pixabay and Wikimedia Commons

Both Pixabay and Wikimedia Commons are superb sources of millions of free royalty-free images. Everything on Pixabay is either donated to the public domain (i.e., Creative Commons CC0 license) or intrinsically public domain (such as photographs by employees of the USA federal government). Wikimedia Commons similarly contains many public domain works, but also includes works under various Creative Commons licenses. The use of images from Wikimedia Commons therefore requires close attention to the individual license requirements. For example, some images require attribution, or cannot be used for commercial purposes, or can only be included in works that are themselves shared under an identical Creative Commons license. All images from Wikimedia Commons used on this website are either public domain or licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license.
